Business Continuity – what happens when Paddington Station’s lines go down?

For once, when we talk about lines going down, in the case of Paddington Station and the Great Western Railways on this occasion we do not mean telephone lines.

On Wednesday 17th several hundred metres of overhead power lines apparently came adrift, causing a cancellation of all services into London Paddington station. For many 10,000s of travellers heading into the city from the west, including Slough, Maidenhead, Reading, Newbury etc, the result was a major problem. Just from a mobile telecoms perspective, Vodafone, O2 and Three are headquartered along that very route.

Then the following Wednesday 24th London Euston also experienced a signal failure which once again seriously affected routes in and out, having a major impact on business and, of course, social travellers.

From a business perspective, what can we learn from these incidents and how can we ensure we maintain business continuity (BC) when major events threaten to impact our ability to access our workplace or even do our job?

Businesses are increasingly taking a ‘whole company’ view and also exploring how individual key staff members can be kept connected when circumstances conspire to offer otherwise.

The real key in our opinion rests in the phrase ‘work is a thing that you do as opposed to a place that you go’  and so many of the very best BC solutions lie in mobility and remote working.

Some popular options include:-

  • Video Conferencing. We are all familiar with FaceTime and these days businesses can also benefit from similar solutions. These are available not only via Microsoft options (Skype for Business/Office 365) but also via many communications specialist options such as Webex, Avaya Equinox and many more.
  • Connecting your mobile device to the company telephone system via a dedicated mobile app – e.g. UCS mobile for Ericsson-LG, One X or Equinox for Avaya and the mobile app available on our Gamma Horizon Hosted offering. These are fabulous in that they also offer additional Unified Communication features such as:- availability (presence), instant messages and an ability to group call or group message from your smartphone device – very cool!
  • Providing users with work connectivity (company funded business broadband) and perhaps even a company telephone handset at home, connected via a secure VPN.
  • Or perhaps a softphone on users’ laptops, with a suitable headset, turning a laptop into a business telephone when connected to home or external (secure) WiFi. Again Ericsson-LG offer their UCS product, Avaya offer Equinox and Gamma Horizon their softphone app.
  • Finally, once you have the above in place it’s very easy to enable your phone system to automatically re-route incoming calls to your remote colleagues without the need for reception or your primary call handler having to take calls and field messages on their behalf. Simple, professional and efficient.

So, the next time the lines go down (train that is), or your team are suffering from the wrong signals (ha ha), why not be ahead of the curve and have them already enabled for business as usual, taking stress out of their day and helping them to deliver your cracking customer experience to colleagues and clients alike.

If you’d like to know what options might be available for your business why not drop us a line (bad pun I know) at sales@evoketelecom.local or your smile as you dial 01509 278278 and have a chat with our sales guys ‘n’ gals.

October Feature: ActionCOACH – Great Coaching Matters Ltd

It seems that every Bank Manager I know wants to change career and become a painter or decorator!

Indeed everywhere we look there are people frustrated or bored at work, longing to do something different or better. But as we all know, there is a world of difference between wanting to do something and taking that leap of faith and making it happen! Especially if you have been with your corporate employer for what seems like forever years.

This is the position Louise Jones found herself in recently, when she made that move and set out on her own, which the help of ActionCOACH.

Louise came into our offices last week to tell us all about It and here is her story in her own words:-

“It struck me that starting a business feels a bit like starting a family.  Really daunting! I wasn’t really certain that this was the right time to do it… is there ever a right time? Are we ever completely ready?  Six months ago I could have listed a dozen reasons why not to go for it; its too expensive, I don’t have enough support, do I have enough time?… and what about the sleepless nights!  Can I parent (manage) effectively?  Actually the similarities between starting a business and starting a family are quite striking. The difference however, is that a business is something that you can (and should!) thoroughly plan for.  The nature or nurture aspect doesn’t exist.  It’s all about the nurturing.

So, we took the brave step to set out on our own, and here we are. I recently sat reflecting on my business start up and realised just how far I had come in such a relatively short period of time. ActionCOACH is all about positivity.  We help people and their businesses get nearer to the person they want to be or achieve the goals they want to achieve and yes starting this business has really propelled me to do that at an impressive rate of knots. I have become a self improvement guru and made all manner of changes to my personal and working life. I am continuously learning and increasing my knowledge… particularly in personally uncomfortable areas…  and have moved from a feeling of little direction to positive full steam ahead.

And, what are our main learns at this early stage? Well, for me there are a number of elements that are imperative to starting out on the right foot which allow you to address those fears and eliminate many startup pitfalls, time issues and sleepless nights!  You will plan, plan, plan…

  • Create a 90 day business plan – this is KEY to your success – it lays out a clear plan of action to work to and measure yourself against.
  • Set SMART goals – to be VERY specific, focus your efforts, use your time and resources productively –  by being specific you will plan exactly the outcome right from the start.
  • Utilise your circle of influence –  work to develop your circle and maximise your opportunities – identify the support network you’ll need and build those relationships.

Our very own ActionCOACH assisted us through these processes, and many others.  We broke down every part of the process into almost weekly goals that we couldn’t fail to achieve and therefore ensured success – it’s actually very simple.

Forward to today…  We will continue to be coached throughout the life of our business so that we thoroughly practice what we teach.   Now we’re ready to help you make your dream come true.  If you’re embarking in business (or indeed anywhere along the route), ActionCOACH will provide all the support you need when your new baby is ‘born’ into this world and begins to toddle.

Remember:  Never wish for fewer challenges!  Always wish for more knowledge.  Even if you only improve by 1% each day – just think where you’ll be in 365 days!”

September updates

We have zoomed into the month enjoying the fresh air, glorious Autumn landscape and peace and tranquillity of the kids being back at school 😊

We have enjoyed working with some super new customers in September in the hospitality, food and retail industries whilst having a jolly good catch up with our lovely existing customers post-holiday season. We have been delighted with all the positive messages, and in the main, we can report that UK plc is in wonderful health. What is more (and we’re not going to use that ‘B’ word here you’ll be pleased to know) there is a definite air of optimism around what new trade opportunities the future might bring. I’m sure like all of us, you have fingers, toes and everything else crossed for a continuation of this wonderful ‘purple patch’.

There seems to be a lot in the news at the moment about 5G from the mobile network providers. Indeed Vodafone recently made a hologram call between Manchester and their Newbury Head Office. But what does it all mean? To help a little we have included an article on Digital Britain which we hope will in some part demystify this popular topic.

Last month we shared just how busy schools and colleges had kept us during the kiddies’ summer break. We thought that with the return to school things might quieten down a bit, but nothing could be further from the truth. Our safe-schools campaign continues to go from strength to strength as we focus on helping schools up and down the country with their safe schools strategy. It is already clear that October half term and even the Christmas break are going to be very busy indeed for our engineering teams, but more about this next month.

COMING SOON: The slightly unusual but very interesting Plantronics Elara 60

Being a leading global headset manufacturer, it came as something of a surprise when we heard about the Elara series 60 mobile phone desk station.

We have of course seen mobile phone units before, most notably the Avaya E169 Media station, which looked slightly like something out of the TV show ‘Space 1999’.

Avaya E169 Media station

However, with the new Elara 60, Plantronics might have ‘cracked’ it. We think that this at last might be a practical and acceptable device to sit on your desk.

The handset will sit in its own docking station and become an integral part of a 3-piece telephony solution: – the smartphone, the desk phone and a wireless Bluetooth headset. The docking station offers speakerphone and of course charges up your smartphone whilst it is docked.

Elara 60
Elara 60
Elara 60

And what is more, with it being a Plantronics, there will never be any shortage of headset options, be it wired or the global winner that is the ‘Voyager’ single earpiece device.

So, what do you think? Could you see yourself docking your mobile phone when you get into the office and donning a headset or pressing the speakerphone button when your next call comes in? Not for everyone we are sure, but we suspect there will be some folk who see this as the answer they have been looking for.

The downside (there is of course always a downside), is that this will not be an integrated part of your company phone system as a docking station. But of course, we are sure wily IT managers will work their way around this. One solution could be to put a system manufacturer mobile app (like UCS from Ericsson-LG or One X / Equinox from Avaya) on the smartphone and hey presto, the device is a fully integrated part of your company phone system.

“Extension 102, Daniel speaking, how can I help you?”

As with all new tech, time will tell. And needless to say, the team at Evoke Telecom will keep you all updated. I’m pretty sure we will grab one and let our techie boys have a play – should be fun 😊

Foldable tech

OK, so let’s be honest, we’ve seen this before haven’t we? I don’t know about you, but I had the wonderful folding Ericsson with the flip and the cool blue screen when it was first launched. And of course, who can forget the ice cool Motorola Razr V3?

When it comes to larger devices, well I don’t know about you, but my laptop folds closed, and my iPad has a keyboard that closes around it to offer protection?

So, what is the big deal about FOLDABLES?

Well, this area is simply massive and a game changer if you ask the major smartphone and tablet manufacturers. If you look at the two mobile phones above the main things that stand out are how small the screen size is and how the hinge creates a definite break point between screen and keyboard. Pretty much the same with laptops and tablets two. The phone, laptop, tablet becomes a device of two halves.

Of course, as we all know, smartphone and tablet surfaces are getting larger. This is driven by the increased use of smart devices for more than simply talk and text. They are now used for a wide variety of business and social requirements, from mirroring a PowerPoint presentation to watching an episode of your current favourite box set on Netflix. But as devices get larger they become increasingly impractical. So, is folding tech the answer? For sure a foldaway phone will not only provide a larger working screen but will also provide additional protection for the screen.

Rumoured to be coming to market as early as 2019, Samsung appear to be currently winning the race to launch the first device. Analysts are expecting the new product to join the current ‘Galaxy’ family ~ catchy names such as the Galaxy ‘X’ or perhaps the Galaxy ‘Wing’ have been rumoured.

But don’t expect the first handsets to be cheap. With screen sizes of up to 17 or 18 cms the new devices will need extremely powerful batteries, whilst remaining slim when folded and light to carry. As we all know, new tech comes at a prices and the anticipated price for the first launch models is anticipated to be somewhere in the $1500 dollars region – ouch!!

So, watch this space and Evoke will keep you updated as events “unfold” 😊

Digital Britain

This is a huge industry hot topic that screams loudly from every piece of telecoms industry press. What is this ‘Digital Britain’ that businesses, suppliers and the government is continually obsessing about?

The concept of Digital Britain envisages the nation joining the ranks of other European countries currently streets ahead in the race to full fibre. According to government figures the UK currently has only four per cent full fibre connections, lagging behind countries like Spain (71 per cent), Portugal (89 per cent) and France (28 per cent).

The targets set out in the Governments Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (FTIR) has set targets for UK-wide full fibre by 2033 and 5G access by 2027. This ‘full fibre’ promise will replace an aged infrastructure that’s no longer fit for purpose (based on copper wiring) with one that delivers against organisations requirements for speed, capacity and resilience.

What is full fibre?

Full fibre describes an internet connection that is entirely served by a fibre optic cable, from the exchange all the way to your house or business. This is known as Fibre To The Premises (FTTP).

This is not to be confused with one of the present systems, which uses fibre optic cables under the pavements and then a traditional copper cable running from the green box in your street to your premises.

This process, known as Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC), can offer a speed increase but ultimately, it’s putting a plaster over the problem, which is that the internet is still being served by a copper cable.

What is driving this major change?

Technology is now a way of life. From the way we shop and consume media to the way organisations operate and communicate, advancements in technology are changing our daily lives at rapid pace. But with so many services on-demand at our fingertips, we expect everything to be ultrafast. 5G promises to create more reliable and responsive mobile internet connections, enabling the widespread adoption of technologies like 3D video, virtual and augmented reality in apps and services, smart cities and self-driving cars.

At the same time the business environment has been evolving. The UK’s workforce is more mobile than ever before. They expect to be productive wherever they are, work smarter and remain effective. But to do so they need the tools that allow them to stay connected and work from anywhere.

It’s not just mobility that’s changing. Openreach’s announcement on completely closing the PSTN network by 2025 (Analogue/Digital lines) changes the dynamic for UK organisations. Everyone will need to migrate to an IP voice service. This means catering for customers that may have many barriers to becoming ‘all IP’. The Evoke team have been discussing some of these challenges with our customers over the last few months.

What challenges have we identified within our customer base?

  1. Main or satellite/branch location not currently able to support IP services (ADSL only – no FTTC/FTTP)
  2. Old cabling that either can’t be replaced due to age/protection of building or the expense of re-wiring large buildings/campus environments with new cabling (CAT5/6).
  3. Budget constraints around replacement of old legacy telephony system that doesn’t support IP.
  4. The myth that you must replace your digital phones to move to IP. On this note we have just exposed on business media a company who were targeting UK business by using this myth as a selling tactic. One of our customers alerted us to this when they received a very pushy and confusing call.

At Evoke we will help you to understand and embrace all the upcoming changes at your own pace. We will keep our customers abreast of the mandatory changes within the technology space whilst ensuring all existing assets are maximised in terms of lifecycle and investment. Here’s a few ideas that could be used to help our customers on their ‘own pace’ journey.

Long Range Power Over Ethanet (LR-POE)

The common misconception is that organisations must rip-and-replace their existing cabling infrastructure to support IP phones. However, new Modern LAN innovation and technology aims to simplify this process, while providing a secure and cost-effective upgrade path.

Long Range POE is designed to transform your existing and secure network into a robust IP backbone to support your new IP endpoints. The Evoke technical team are evaluating LR-POE options.

Hybrid Migration to IP/SIP

Many existing systems can support new IP lines whilst still being able to retain existing digital handsets. This is helpful from a budget perspective but also if existing cabling is extensive and complicated to change e.g. listed building or large campus environment. We do have some customers that have a mixture of IP and digital handsets on the same system, where they have managed to partially re-cable part of their building/campus to CAT5/6.

Move to Hosted VOIP

This is a great idea for customers that want to move to the predictability of a monthly cost model with integrated calling bundles, along with all the benefits and flexibility of hosted telephony. In some cases, you can even re-use some of your existing equipment, again further maximising your existing investment.

If you would like to know more about how Evoke can help you understand the impact and benefits of any of our September Informer topics, pick up the phone or email one of our super sales team on 01509 278278 or sales@evoketelecom.local.

New Rules for Mobile Billing

We were delighted to read about a new Ofcom directive coming into effect in October. The new rules require providers of mobile phone services to offer customers the ability to cap the cost of their bill and notify customers when the limit is about to be reached. This will be available to all those taking out a mobile contract on or after 1st October 2018.

If a service continues to be provided without this consent, the provider is prohibited from billing the customer for any charges for the service after the limit is reached.

Ofcom hopes that providers will voluntarily offer bill limits to those in existing contracts but this will not be a legal requirement. The new legislation refers to the customer having an opportunity to specify a bill limit. So, whether your mobile contract is with Evoke or another provider, this might be an area you would like to look at in the future to keep tight control of mobile spend and protect your business from any unexpected bills, but at the same time this might prove a useful piece of information for when you are arranging your own personal mobile contracts for family/teenagers etc. Need we say more!

Rest assured that Evoke are geared up to comply with this mandatory new regulation and we will be sure to remind you of this great new directive before your contract renews.

August updates

August was a month that’s been ‘umbrella’s all round’ be it as a sunshield from the lovely summer sunshine or for its more usual use as we have seen some rain storms of quite epic proportions.

Our August was totally predictable. As usual, given that the schools were on summer recess, for us this month has been virtually all about schools, schools and you guessed it, schools.

Primary academies through to technical colleges up and down the UK have kept our engineering team extremely busy. Just in time for the start of the new term, we are putting the final touches to a large deployment at a schools Foundation in the East Midlands which has included replacing not one, but two ageing phone systems. What is more, given the new focus on public safety in schools, we have also seen the addition of nearly 300 of the new Avaya J139s handsets (read more about the J139 here). One in every classroom!

Not to be outdone, we have also had some new customers join us from outside of the education sector, including a well-known international charity. Who said August was a quiet month?

August also saw the completion of a large telecoms consulting engagement as we supported the technology move of a UK corporate division across to US ownership.

Finally, August saw a landmark for us in that we completed our first and as such inaugural customer training workshop for engineers. What is more, it was targeted at a specific vertical sector. We bet you can’t guess which one?

BT price increases in October

As many will be aware, BT are raising prices again, with new prices taking affect in just a few weeks’ time on 1st October (2018).

If you still have your telephone lines, telephone calls and other associated products with BT, you should have been notified already, probably by a note on a recent bill, or perhaps via letter or email directly from BT or perhaps your BT Local Business provider?

However, if you have missed this notification here is a link that will take you to the list for all the services that will be affected:

https://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44306/?s_cid=btb_FURL_october18prices

We understand that sometimes this information can be rather fulsome and on occasion time consuming to trawl your way through. But do not worry, we are happy to help and will gladly work through your services for you and explain what the increases might mean for your business bottom line.

Don’t forget, if you are thinking about moving, you can of course email us a copy of your most recent bill and we will do a free of charge comparison with Evoke Telecom rates and tell you exactly how much you might be able to save! What have you got to lose?

So, why pay more, when you can move to Evoke Telecom for your telephone lines and calls, plus of course for your broadband services? You can then invest the savings that you will undoubtedly make, elsewhere in your business. Now that sounds like good business sense.

Why not let the team help you now? You know the drill, all you need to do is email us or send a copy of your latest bill to sales@evoketelecom.local or smile (before the prices go up of course) whilst you dial the team on 01509 278278.

TUFF Phones

Everybody wants mobility, but at the same time many fear that deploying mobile phones to employees often comes at a price. Phones dropped on the floor, dropped in water, left on the roof of a van or car (we’ve all done that one!) etc etc. What is more, many companies choose not to invest in mobile telephone insurance because it often comes at a price that simply does not present a good perceived economy or return on the money invested.

Tuff phone

The TUFF T400S – as tough as it looks!

We have seen lots of ruggedised devices come and in some cases go, in the handheld smartphone and PDA market. There are the specialist PDA brands such as Zebra, Honeywell and Dolphin to name but a few. There are also ruggedised phones from brands recognised in other sectors, such as JCB and Land Rover for example. There are also a wide range of specialist phones that address the Android Smartphone features conundrum, housed in a more traditional mobile phone form factor.

Tuff phones are waterproof

Water – no problem!

We have recently revisited this particular sector of the mobility market and have been very impressed with the product being delivered by TUFF phones.

TUFF phones are a UK based company that specialises in manufacturing high quality rugged mobile phones. With an aluminium–titanium alloy internal frame, the device does not need bulky plastic outer cases for toughness. This means it can be designed to be slim, lightweight and feel more like a regular smartphone in the hand.

TUFF offer a wide range of devices, all fully Android loaded, with a variety of budget through to high specification options. TUFF phones also come as standard with Gorilla Glass screens and Military grade integral protective cases. What is more, they are also IP68 waterproof and dust proof with all devices being dual SIM capable, negating the need to carry two devices.

Starting at less than £250.00 (excluding VAT) we are very impressed that they present an affordable entry level pricing point.

But don’t just take our word for it, why not give one a try the next time one of your team destroys yet another mobile phone. You’re bound to be impressed.

The TUFF T500 – tough can also be cool!

Evoke Telecom Consulting for Learn Direct and PSI Online

It’s a little-known fact that not only do Evoke Telecom provide best in class products, but we also provide best in class telecommunications consulting services too.

Having already completed a 12-month consulting engagement to review and recommend a suitable Contact Centre solution and Unified Communications strategy for a large UK Services provider, we have also been busy working with a major US Corporation for what turned out to be an equally complicated and challenging project.

Following the recent acquisition of a UK competitor, PSI Online, headquartered in California, USA, engaged Evoke’s consulting team to manage a full communications suite transfer across to their UK division.

During this 5-month program the team, led by Susie Wardell, worked very closely with both the US and UK leadership teams, to drive a seamless ‘lift and shift’ of services across from the acquired business to PSI’s multiple UK business locations. This project proved to be an extremely complicated assignment, with multiple concurrent program workstreams requiring high levels of insight, industry knowledge and drive.

Susie worked on a day to day basis with our main stakeholder, The President for PSI International, Janet Garcia, ultimately completing what has been recognised by the client as an exceptional delivery.

As a result, we are proud to have received a glowing testimonial from Janet herself!

“PSI employed Evoke for an extremely complicated project with very tight deadlines and numerous stakeholders. It was a high risk and high value implementation that has proven to be a real success. I have no doubt in my mind that this was largely down to Susie’s leadership of the project. She managed all stakeholders and the full supply chain with an extremely tight rein whilst remaining charming and graceful at all times, even when put under real pressure. PSI are extremely grateful to the team at Evoke for doing such a good job and will look for further opportunities to work with such a high performing team.”

Janet Garcia, President, PSI International

I’m sure it won’t be long before we have the pleasure of working with the wonderful team at PSI again soon.

Training our Avaya IP Office customers in the education sector

As we all know, IT departments like to be able to manage and administrate their own systems in house, including their telephone systems. Every time even the smallest change is needed, it takes time and costs money to get a telecoms maintainer to dial in, or visit site to make the changes.

In reflection of this, in August we invited some of our largest schools and colleges to join us for a free of charge training session on how to manage their own Avaya IP Office telephone system. Attendees included Network Managers through to IT technicians. We also had a mixed bag of Avaya systems in the room, from the usual IP500v2 call server, through to virtualised deployments to both VMware and HyperV. So, as you might imagine the training room was alive with conversation as the teams discussed their differing environments.

Unlike more traditional classroom training sessions, we ran this session using a member of our engineering team, “someone that does, as opposed to someone that tells” it could be said. Tom, who was our trainer for the day, took the guys through all aspects of administration and programming, including a level of system configuration.

“Tom was a fantastic presenter and very approachable, he made the scenario feel relaxing, allowing us all to ask questions when required. The course definitely met my requirements, plus some handy tips and tricks that will help us to become more efficient going forward.”

Gareth Ferris, IT Technician
Reaseheath College

During the working lunch session, we also spent some time introducing Avaya’s latest handsets and gave the attendees a live introduction to Avaya’s new Equinox Unified Communications suite.

Feedback not only during, but also after the session has been wonderfully positive as all attendees felt that they massively benefited from the time that they had invested in joining us. All have now returned to their respective schools and colleges considerably more proficient and as a result more self sufficient on their respective Avaya systems. Now that’s a real WIN / WIN.

Indeed, we are so delighted with the feedback that we are already discussing the next session. Watch this space!

“Having a training session with a practising 3rd line engineer experienced in many installs in a variety of configurations really made the session worthwhile. As well as clearly explaining all the most common and useful types of administration – the additional knowledge of precise workflows, helpful tips, and guidance on what to and what not to do has already been deployed on our site to great effect.”

James Leeson, Network Manager
Loughborough Schools Foundation

If you’d like to know how we can train your IT team to administrate and program your Avaya IP Office, then please feel free to email us at sales@evoketelecom.local or smile whilst you dial 01509 278278.

The new Avaya J139 entry level gigabit handset

If you have a gigabit (10/100/1000) IT network, or like to connect your deskphone to the same socket that you plug your PC into, you will most likely want to use a gigabit handset so as not to affect the speed and performance of your network.

Traditionally so called ‘gigabit handsets’ have been high spec and high cost, making them a key budgetary consideration for many companies.

As a part of their IP telephone series update, Avaya have added the new J139 to the ‘J series’ range of handsets (shown below).

Avaya handsets

At long last, we hear you say, as Avaya add a cost effective, affordable, high specification handset to the range.
The handset boasts:-

  • A 2.8” 240 x 340 colour screen.
  • Multiple line features with four red/green display indicators
  • Hard buttons for phone, messages, contacts, history, home, navigation, cluster, headset, speaker, volume, mute
  • LEDS for speaker, mute, headset, history, message etc
  • Gigabit ethernet line interface 10/100/1000, with
  • Second ethernet interface 10/100/1000
  • Full duplex speakerphone and handset
  • Plus much much more :-

Based on open SIP technology, the handset also accommodates unified communications solutions through Session Initiated Protocol.

J139 close up

The handset and features are designed to work on Avaya’s most recent system software release r11.0 – so you will need to update your system software to add these fabulous new handsets to your desks. But of course if you already have Avaya annual IPOSS then your r11.00 software upgrade is completely free.

But don’t just take our word for it, why not take a look for yourself. We have the whole range of Avaya J series handsets in our offices for you to see for yourself. Or of course we could pop across with them for you to also show to your colleagues.

Needless to say, If you would like to talk to our sales team about this article, the new J series handsets, or options around your r11.0 upgrade, then please feel free to  email us at sales@evoketelecom.local or smile whilst you dial 01509 278278.

Ericsson-LG launch new r6.0 software for the iPECS platform

July sees availability of the exciting new system software refresh from Ericsson-LG for their incredibly popular iPECS telephony platforms, the super eMG80 small business platform and the super flexible UCS range.

The ever popular iPECS is already extremely feature rich and super reliable, so we were somewhat wondering what enhancements the ‘boffins’ at Ericsson-LG might be able to add to the successful equation. And, they have not disappointed. Not far reaching, in that they did not actually need to be. R6.0 more so offers enhancements and small improvements to the mobility features of this already successful formula.

The majority of development and enhancement has been focussed on how the system interacts with mobile licences on business users smartphones. NB – like most manufacturers, the Ericsson-LG UCS mobile solution only works with Android and iOS smartphones.

The largest change is how mobile apps and soft clients are now managed on and off system. Licences will now fall into 3 categories, and users will be able to log in to multiple services with a single log-on, as opposed to the previous ‘either / or’ scenario.

This also means that call data and recording will be unified as opposed to per extension as previous.

Call recording on mobile will now not use system resource, making the control unit, more powerful and flexible.

Much work has been done on iOS10 integration for apple devices, with tighter integration into the apple iOS user interface using apple iOS 10 callkit:-

  • You will now be able to answer calls directly from the lock screen,
  • You will be able to make calls from native iOS contacts,
  • Make calls from recent and missed calls, plus
  • You will be able to use Bluetooth features to answer calls / hang up etc.

Both Android and iOS functionality has now been improved to support call recording: –

  • You can now ‘on demand’ record from your device,
  • Playback following recording, on your mobile handset
  • And it doesn’t take up any system resource – which is wonderful

Finally, It also now supports an automatic failover solution for UCS premium licences / clients and has a new ‘push content notification’ feature.

We cannot wait to start upgrading our customers iPECS systems to r6.0. BUT don’t forget, you are only eligible for upgrade if your SSA (software support and assurance) is up to date.

Evoke Telecom invited to join the Avaya UK Partner Advisory Council

Super news in July as Evoke Telecom were invited to join Avaya’s “Partner Advisory Council” for SME and Mid Market sized businesses in the UK.

The Advisory council, a select collection of UK based Avaya Resellers and Systems Integrators meet regularly to discuss all things telephony and Unified Communications in the UK.

The July meeting was hosted by Alison Hastings, head of Avaya UK Channel Sales, and supported by members of Avaya UK Marketing, distribution, software development and customer retention teams. The venue was Avaya’s UK London offices, up on floor 16 at Tower 42. Needless to say the views from the tower were quite breath-taking.

One of our Directors, David, represented Evoke at the session, where partners and Avaya discussed the UK marketplace and how we might better work together to provide better products and better service to our customers.

The specific content of the session unfortunately has to remain confidential, but needless to say it was awash with insightful feedback and great marketing ideas.

It’s wonderful to be in an industry where one of your key suppliers (as a global leading player in the SME space) takes the time to listen and share!

Avaya

Bravo Avaya – we say “Cheers to that!”

Headsets are just headsets – right?

In recent months Evoke Telecom have seen a massive increase in demand for headsets. What are the benefits of using a headset instead of (or in many cases as well as) a handset?

The first and most common requirement is for teams where typing is necessary, (or database look ups on a PC or laptop) whilst on a telephone call.  Craning a telephone receiver between chin and shoulder has become an office art form – but for many it often leads to a sore neck and general discomfort. Not to mention the heat during our current wave of wonderful weather.

For others a headset helps to drown out distracting office noise whilst on a telephone call “sorry could you please repeat that” is often not popular with a caller when it is said for the 3rd time!

Another good reason for a headset, when wireless, is that it provides the option to walk around when on a call, rather than being fixed for a long period to your seat. OUR ENGINEERS can often be found in corridors, or between racking in the kit stores, whilst on a call. After all, ALL DAY is a long time to be in your seat at your desk isn’t it?

Finally, the other popular need is for when you need a connection to your laptop or PC – probably the most popular need of all, when using video conferencing, a soft phone on your PC, Skype – or just listening to a recording or perhaps some soothing music whilst you work.

But why would you need to talk to the experts? After all, headsets are headsets, right?

Well, actually there are literally 1,000s of headsets to choose from:

  • Hundreds of manufacturers
  • Many different types
  • One ear (monaural) or two ears (binaural)
  • Wireless or wired
  • Laptop, telephone handset, or general Bluetooth connected.
  • Business grade, general none business standard.
  • Do they need noise cancelling technology included?
  • £25.00 each or £300.00 each and what is the difference.

I’m sure you are starting to get the idea – headsets are a massively complex industry with a bewildering choice that can often be confusing and difficult to navigate.

To help, below are some of the headsets our customers have chosen in June and in introduction to the headsets that we use ourselves at Evoke Telecom.

Well in June – far and away most popular were:-

Jabra 930 Pro USB

Jabra 930 Pro USB – very popular in office and contact centre environments for connection into the users laptop or PC. One customer took a top up consignment of more than 50 this month.

Also very popular with our Ericsson-LG and Avaya users are the Agent AG-2 headsets with bottom cords – for connection into their desk phones. These are proving to be high quality, high specification, and with a 2 year warranty, extremely good value.

So what headsets do we use in our offices?

Well despite having handsets with wireless / Bluetooth receivers, there are often times on calls and conference calls where we need both hands. Under those circumstances we use our Plantronics headsets.

…and when we are on video conferences, listening to things on our laptops and PCs ~ or simply relaxing with some music whilst we work we use these rather funky Jabra Evolve 40s.

Working from home considered to be most productive work arrangement

For this month’s main topic in Evoke informer, we have taken an article by Nigel Dunn at Jabra to review the merits of working from home as seen from some headset manufacturers prospective.

The home office is considered to be the most productive workspace in 2018, according to research by Jabra. The global survey of business professionals in the U.S., U.K., Germany and France found that nearly one in three U.K. employees considers working from home to be the most productive. Yet strangely the majority are not allowed to. This highlights that U.K. businesses still have a long way to go in providing flexible working options for their employees.

Nigel Dunn, managing director of EMEA North at Jabra points out that to be productive, employees need to be able to concentrate.

“That’s not always possible in today’s busy, open-plan environments where distractions abound. It could be colleagues coming up to ask questions, meetings that fall right when you’ve got into the ‘zone’ or merely the general hubbub of day-to-day office life. There is also the fact that the strict office working regime often isn’t conducive to productive working. Not everyone works best between the fixed hours of 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with many employees preferring to work early in the morning or late at night.”

Dunn argues that there is an outdated belief that every employer is deaf to its workers’ arguments about homeworking.

“Many businesses are looking for any opportunity to increase productivity and if employees can prove that they work better at home, then most sensible managers will at least explore the option.”

However, Dunn added that homeworking was far from commonplace.

“A large part of that is down to issues of trust. It’s understandable that employers might be nervous about surrendering oversight of their workers, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Today’s technologies mean that it’s easy to check in and communicate with employees who aren’t in the office; they also enable workers to collaborate with each other no matter where they are.”

The survey also explored what hindered productivity in the workplace where noise was considered the number one deterrent to productivity, with the most annoying type of noise for office workers the sound of colleagues talking to each other in their direct vicinity. Unsurprisingly, given advances in technology, the workforce has become more mobile in 2018. A higher number of people claim that more time is spent away from their primary workplace. In the U.K., on average almost half a working day is spent away from the desk at the office, be it walking around (13%) or driving to places (9%).

Dunn believes that as homeworking increases, workspaces need to be rationalised.

“That means businesses have to support mobile workers whenever they drop into the office, with a balance of open plan and meeting areas/rooms for smaller meetings, one-to-one chats or as spaces where someone can find peace and quiet to concentrate on their work.”

Thank you to Nigel Dunn at Jabra for this article.

Is one broadband connection enough?

Following a recent audit of broadband across our base of customers,  we established that only 31% of them had more than 1 broadband connection. So, by default that means that the other 69% are wholly dependent upon the performance and availability of a single connection to run their business.

But, why is that a concern, why might that be important?

We’ve all heard the one about the digger going through the cable, or the local BT exchange kit going down…. But surely that never happens, or does it? Well, do you know what, it does as you can see below, where both of these events have happened to our customers over the last 12 months:-

An outage experienced just 4 weeks ago by a customer on 30th May 2018 due to a trencher going through a cable connected to one of our customers in Gloucestershire.

July last year we had another circuit go down when cooling kit failed at a BT Exchange near Luton in Bedfordshire. In that instance our customer lost their internet between Friday and Monday.

In both cases I’m pleased to say that our customers had secondary failover broadband in place and so had the ability to continue their business operations whilst network repairs took place.

But, as we become more and more dependent upon internet and cloud services, more dependent upon increased bandwidth and in many cases dependent upon our broadband link for our telephone calls. What would you do if you had a serious outage of your broadband services?

So, ask yourself, what would happen if my internet had a serious service effecting incident? How would it impact my business? How much would a secondary internet connection cost and how does that compare to the financial impact that no internet service might have on my business?

A prediction? By this time next year 69% of our customers will have a secondary broadband line and the other 31%? …. Well they will be waiting for theirs to be installed.

Using Unified Communications

Nice and simple, we thought that we might share this latest infographic from Avaya. There is a lot of reference to mobility and remote working, which is a hot topic in our newsletter this month with more articles further down. So, take a look and see what you think.

Experience Avaya – Manchester May 2018

Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of joining hundreds of customers and other Avaya resellers and integrators on the final leg of Avaya’s 2018 ‘Global Tour’ at the #ExperienceAvaya event at the Manchester Central Convention Complex.

And what an event it was. Outside of the main conference hall in the partner area, there were countless examples of Avaya in action including, innovative use cases for IoT technology, alongside Avaya Ava the new cloud AI solution. There was also a range of new IP hardware devices available to examine and test.

Particularly eye catching though was the new CU-360 video conferencing camera unit, which is due to be released later on this summer across Europe, as a compliment to Avaya’s Cloud Video Conferencing solution – Equinox Meetings Online. The CU- 360 with its high definition camera and microphone array converts any zone where deployed into a conference or huddle experience using Android OS. The potential for this combination is extremely exciting.

Avaya also expressed a strong and continued commitment to UK and Irish customers, communicating its focus on simplifying technology, investing in its employees and a total commitment to making Avaya much easier to do business with.

UK and Ireland Managing Director Ioan MacRae was happy to share the exciting news around Avaya’s continued growth:-

Avaya UK and Ireland Managing Director Ioan MacRae“Avaya UK has been going from strength to strength. We’ve experienced six quarters of sequential growth, 62% of global cloud deployments have been implemented here in the UK and our IP Office Powered By solution has grown 40-50% quarter on quarter. We’re taking the opportunity today to show our customers the unique alliances we have with our partners and the best-in-class world-leading technology we can provide.”

All in all it was an informative and extremely interactive event and has provided us with an insight into the future and all things Avaya.
